The Role of Trauma-Informed Care in Long-Term Healing

Trauma-informed care is an approach that recognizes how past experiences shape the way a person responds to stress, relationships, and even everyday situations. Rather than asking "what is wrong with you," this framework asks "what happened to you," shifting the focus toward understanding and healing.

A Shift in Perspective

"What happened to you" is a question that opens the door to healing. "What is wrong with you" closes it.

This approach is especially relevant in work involving domestic violence, abuse recovery, and complex family circumstances, where safety and trust need to be rebuilt gradually.

Building Safety First

Trust cannot be rushed. Trauma-informed care prioritizes physical and emotional safety before asking a client to revisit difficult experiences, recognizing that healing happens at its own pace.

Tools for the Work

Combined with modalities like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, a trauma-informed approach supports clients in developing coping skills while honoring the pace that feels safe for their own healing process.

Healing is not linear, and a trauma-informed approach makes room for that reality.
